Tongue Tie Evaluation & Treatment
in Dallas, Texas

Understand Your Child’s Tongue Tie. Explore the Right Next Step

At Beyond Pediatric Dentistry in Dallas, we help families understand concerns about tongue movement, feeding, and oral function. Our team evaluates infants and children, explains the findings, and discusses whether treatment or additional support may be appropriate. We begin with your questions and an evaluation, so you can make an informed decision about your child’s care.

Start with an evaluation. Understand your options.

If you are looking for a tongue tie dentist in Dallas, our team can help you understand what to ask and how to get started.

At Beyond Pediatric Dentistry, we evaluate tongue movement and oral function alongside the concerns that brought your family in. We explain our findings before discussing whether treatment may be appropriate.

Whether you have a referral or are asking about tongue tie for the first time, bring your questions. You do not need to arrive with a treatment decision already made.

Understanding the concern

What is a tongue tie?

A tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, occurs when the tissue connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth restricts its movement.

The presence or appearance of that tissue alone does not determine whether treatment is needed. An evaluation considers movement, function, and the specific concern.

For babies

Questions about feeding?

Painful breastfeeding, difficulty latching, or concerns about milk transfer and weight gain call for a feeding assessment. Tongue tie is one possible contributor; feeding difficulties can have other causes.

For infants, care should be coordinated with the pediatrician and lactation support. Nonsurgical support is considered before deciding whether a release is needed.

For older children

Bring the concern that prompted your visit.

Tell us about eating, speech, oral hygiene, or tongue movement concerns and any evaluations your child has already received.

We consider those observations alongside the examination and discuss whether another provider’s assessment or additional support would be helpful.

Concerned about your baby’s feeding or weight gain? Contact your pediatrician promptly. A dental appointment should not delay assessment of feeding or growth concerns.

The Beyond approach

Tongue Space. Tongue Tone. Tongue Tie.

Our practice describes its approach through the “Three T’s.” This gives us a framework for discussing the tongue and surrounding oral structures together, rather than focusing on the attachment alone.

Tongue Space

We consider the surrounding oral structures and available space as part of the examination.

Tongue Tone

We consider oral muscle function and the way your child uses their tongue.

Tongue Tie

We examine the attachment beneath the tongue and assess whether it restricts movement.

The goal is a clear explanation. Ask us to explain the findings, what remains uncertain, and the reasons for any recommended next step.

Evaluation before treatment

Tongue tie treatment and release options.

A tongue tie release is a procedure to release restrictive tissue beneath the tongue. The recommendation and technique depend on the evaluation, age, and individual circumstances.

Before any procedure, our team discusses the reason for treatment, alternatives, possible benefits, risks, comfort measures, and follow-up.

Laser release

Beyond Pediatric Dentistry uses laser techniques for infant releases. If treatment is recommended, ask the doctor to explain the technique and what to expect.

Not every tongue tie needs a release. A visible attachment is not, by itself, a reason for surgery. The decision should address a specific functional problem and consider appropriate alternatives.

Your child’s appointment

What to expect at a tongue tie evaluation.

We want you to leave with a better understanding of the findings and your options. Bring your questions and let us know about previous assessments.

Share your observations

Tell us what prompted the appointment and about any feeding support, therapy, or medical and dental evaluations your child has received.

Review the examination

Our team examines tongue movement and oral function, then explains how the findings relate to your questions.

Discuss next steps

We talk through the recommendation and whether treatment, further assessment, or other support may be appropriate.

Planning beyond the procedure

Questions about recovery and follow-up?

Ask about the follow-up plan before treatment. Our team can explain appointment arrangements, how to contact the office, and when to seek help.

If your child already works with a lactation consultant, speech-language pathologist, or another provider, tell us so that care can be coordinated.

Questions to bring

  • What specific concern would treatment address?
  • What alternatives should we consider?
  • What comfort measures are planned?
  • What should we expect after the appointment?
  • When is follow-up, and whom should we call?

Tongue tie evaluation and treatment FAQs.

Have a question about scheduling? Call (972) 808-6825.

Does every tongue tie need treatment?

No. Treatment depends on whether restricted movement is causing a functional problem. Our guide to tongue tie treatment decisions explores this question further.

Do you evaluate infants and older children?

Yes. Tell us your child’s age and the concern when you contact the office. Families seeking infant care can also visit our Infant Frenectomy page .

Is laser always better than scissors?

No single technique is best for every situation. For infant frenotomy, evidence does not establish laser as superior to scissors. Ask the doctor to explain the proposed technique and its risks and benefits.

Will treatment fix feeding or speech concerns?

A result cannot be guaranteed. Feeding and speech concerns can have several causes, and additional assessment or support may be needed.

My child has had a release before. Can we ask about it?

Yes. Let us know about the previous procedure and your current concerns. Bring available records. A new procedure should not be assumed necessary without an assessment.

What should I ask about discomfort and recovery?

Ask the doctor about comfort measures, the expected recovery for your child, follow-up, and how to get help with concerns. You should understand the plan before deciding on treatment.
